The Brunel Awards International Railway Design Competition was held in September 1996 in Copenhagen, hosted by the Danish State Railways (DSB). The aim of the award is to promote the aesthetic quality of architecture, rolling stock, graphic arts, corporate identity and uniforms, as well as good design in all railway activities. There were 225 entries from 21 railways around the world.
The competition was established in 1985 in the UK by the Watford Conference of European Railway Architects and Designers to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Great Western Railway (GWR).
It was named after the world-famous Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806–1859) who built the GWR from London to Bristol.
Other previous competitions have been held in Austria, the Netherlands, Spain and the USA.

Six works by Japanese railway companies were commended: Iwaki-Hanawa Station and Series E217 EMU (JR East), Nijo-Hanazono
Viaduct (JR West), car colour scheme (JR Central), Corporate pamphlet, and mobile art sculpture (JR Kyushu).
