Nobuya Abe

2001/02/24 - 2001/03/25

Born in Niigata, the self-taught artist Ten'ya Abe (1913-71) experimented with figurative painting, cubism and surrealism before evolving a mature abstract style. Abe was one of those Japanese artists who was lucky enough to have direct experience of the global artistic movements of the 20th century. This exhibition will offer an overview of his achievement including his later career when he was based in Rome, where his work developed from art informel to geometric abstraction, influencing a number of Italian artists including Lucio Fontana.
