A Forgotten Painter Whose Work Celebrates the Joys of Love and Springtime Heinrich Vogeler 2000/12/02 - 2001/02/12 The early work of Heinrich Vogeler (1872-1942) came to the attention of the Japanese public when it was featured in early issues of the celebrated artistic and literary journal Shirakaba, published in 1910. Turning his hand to craft, design and architecture as well as painting, Vogeler started by working in a decorative, art nouveau style before violent social changes caused him to take a completely new direction, culminating in his lonely death in U.S.S.R where he painted idealistic communist canvases. This will be the first major retrospective exhibition of a forgotten artist. Artist: Heinrich Vogeler |
