JOSIAH CONDER: A Victorian Architect in Japan 1997/05/30 - 1997/07/21 The British architect, Josiah Conder (1852-1920) was invited to Japan by the Meiji government in 1877, and designed the stately residences of wealthy people and politicians, including the Rokumeikan and the Nicolai-do.He also directed his efforts into educating people on western architecture at what is now the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo. The great Japanese architects, Kingo Tatsuno and Tokuma Katayama were his pupils. To celebrate 120 years since his coming to Japan, this exhibition traces his path through Japan, looking at about 250 of his works, including architectural drawings, models, and the achievements of his pupils.
