SUMIO KAWAKAMI: Poetry in Wood-block Prints 1996/04/06 - 1996/05/19 Sumio Kawakami was born in Yokohama. In his youth, he travelled in Canada, the United States and Alaska. After he returned to Japan, he became an English teacher and made many wood-block prints on themes such as "Civilization and Enlightenment," and "Passion of the West, " Kawakami was also active as a poet. This retrospective of 150 of his works presented wood-block prints, created by a unique fusion of painting and poetry in groups with the themes, "The Poet," "The West," "Civilization and Enlightenment," and "Landscapes."
